Tomislav Tomašević at the IASC 2017 Conference

Tomislav Tomašević, IPE’s Program Manager, participated at the 16th Biennial Conference of the International Association for the Study of the Commons (IASC) from July 11 to 14. The IASC is the world’s leading association of scientists studying the commons and Tomislav is its full member. Its first president was the Nobel Laureate Elinor Ostrom, and you can learn more about the association on their website.

This year’s the conference took place in Utrecht and its theme was “Practicing the Commons: Self-governance, Cooperation, and Institutional Change”. More information about the conference and its program can be found here.

Tomislav gave a presentation on his work “Urban Commons in the Western Balkans: From Cooperation to Conflict and Back,” in which he presented the institutional and critical theoretical framework of the commons, and using the examples of Zagreb and Pula showed how these two theoretical frameworks and practices alternate between cooperation and conflict between the practitioners of the commons and the local authorities.
