About IPE
Institute for Political Ecology (IPE) is a research and educational organisation that designs alternative development models and innovative institutional frameworks for democratic political and economic transformation of society. The Institute addresses contemporary ecological changes as social phenomena that reduce or magnify social inequalities and influence power relations. IPE carries out transdisciplinary research and educational programmes in cooperation with domestic and international institutions and organisations. Based on these, IPE provides expert analyses and a discussion platform for social movements and political and economic actors in Croatia and abroad that advocate ecologically sustainable, just and democratic society.
Fellowship programme 2021
IPE’s junior research fellowship programme aims to support research and advocacy work of young scholars who have demonstrated exceptional motivation to tackle key social, political and environmental challenges of the 21st century. The primary output of the fellowship is a draft policy paper of publishing standard or a draft academic article.
This year’s call continues the fellowship’s focus on degrowth and its envisioning of a radical shift towards sustainability, while prioritizing a feminist lens. Despite often explicitly stating its allegiance to feminism, degrowth activism and theory still have plenty of room to fully incorporate feminist ethos and acknowledge their feminist roots. The relationship between feminism and degrowth is therefore one of continuous negotiation. By offering this research position, we hope to embolden feminist voices within degrowth, as well as degrowth thinking within feminism.
If your research is not at home in degrowth, we also welcome other approaches that are at the intersection of climate crisis, patriarchy, coloniality and capitalism, and can offer critiques of economic growth. This includes contributions rooted in the often-overlapping fields of feminist ecological economics, feminist political ecology, feminist environmentalism, (material) ecofeminism, social reproduction theory, feminist ecosocialism, queer ecology, etc.
All these perspectives present an effort to reimagine and reorganize the political economy based on values of social and ecological justice. The question they all share, and that should underpin your research, is: what does it mean to envisage a good life for all, human and non-human, in a feminist way?
We encourage you to be unconventional in your thinking and choose a research topic that feels most urgent to you. The concepts that you might find useful to think with include:
- care / caring economy
- care income
- productive and reproductive labour
- hegemonic masculinity
- posthumanism
In addition to theoretical interventions, we are also interested in practical experiences and reflections on working within degrowth and climate justice movements reckoning with issues like sexism, racism, transphobia, etc. Policy and process interventions or integration of published academic discussions into a proposal on how to deal with these issues are encouraged.
The fellow will closely cooperate with the fellowship facilitator and work with IPE’s research network, and is also expected to contribute to other ongoing research activities and public events organised by the Institute. The selected candidate will also participate in networking, dissemination and educational programmes integral to IPE’s operations in 2021.

The fellow will receive a stipend of EUR 800 net per month (in HRK equivalent) to cover accommodation, living expenses, travel, health insurance and other costs related to their stay in Zagreb.
